Report of the Genealogy Special Interest Group 22 March 2012

The meeting started with a general discussion on family history topics, in particular the on-going improvement and updating of many Genealogy research websites. Several, e.g Lostcousins, send monthly newsletters that contain information and links to other websites. One notes the addition of 31 million records to the Familysearch website including many from Australia and New Zealand passenger lists and probate records.

Robert took us through a method of searching on the Queensland Govt archives site; http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx Go to the Family History link,

Birth, death and marriage indexes can be searched refining the date to get to the day/month/ year if the event.

Rootsweb mailing lists are a great resource, subscribing to a list is free and can be cancelled at any time. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Lists are available on surnames, localities, and other subjects. Also check; http://www.rootschat.com/forum/ browse or subscribe (no fee). Scroll down on the site to see all subjects.

Averil showed us how to look at the London Illustrated News magazines through the City Libraries site, logo in with your card number and pin. On the Library site go to Internet Gateway; History; Britain, scroll down to The London Illustrated News 1842 – 2003.

This gives access to the ‘Gale New Vault’ containing The Illustrated London News Historical Archive, from 14 May 1842 to final in 2003. Digitized pages with full-text caption.

Subjects and queries for next month welcome, please contact;
